Golf Ball + Club Face = Impact

By Noel Halpin

This is the natural progression of a golf swing. Following this action we should have sent the ball in the direction which we aimed in. That also should be a natural progression but more times than not we fail to do this, and we must ask ourselves why does this happen. Why is it that the ball tends to fly off in a totally different direction than we aimed for.

There we are we stand up on the tee box, we look down the fairway, we pick out the spot where we want the ball to land, we go through the practice motion of our swing, we size up the golf ball, we raise our club keeping the arc as even as we can, and then we make contact. The moment of truth arrives. The ball has landed a long way off from where we intended. We raise our eyes up to the heavens and blame everything except the real cause for this embarrassment, namely ourselves.

To send the ball off in a direction other than where we planned it to go is more than annoying, it is frustrating, and demoralising, which in turn has a detrimental effect on the rest of our game. If you can recognise yourself in here somewhere, then you need to start analyzing your game. You need to start at the beginning and go through it root and branch to sort out the problem.

More times than not the problem lies in the motion of club face to ball impact. This is caused by not taking the care to line up your club face directly behind the ball. Another reason is your hand and wrist motion. You have not kept your grip steady, this is caused by breaking your wrist position too early on the upward swing. If this happens you have no chance of hitting an accurate drive. There is another reason why you do not send the ball where you want it to go, and this is probably more important than any of the other causes, and that is lack of focus. If you lose focus on your downward drive then the club will never make contact with the centre of the golf ball. You can work out the logical result if that happens. The ball will at the very least go into the rough, or worse still out of bounds.

To find the dead centre of the golf ball, you must align the club face directly behind the ball. You must keep your back solid on your back swing, you must not move the club anywhere from the arc you created on your upward swing and it must come down exactly on the same alignment.

You must keep totally focused on this movement with your eyes glued to the back of the ball where you want to make impact. This action will give you a solid and centered impact on the golf ball. It will give you both accuracy and distance. If you do this you will be guaranteed a very good drive which will bring you nearer to the green and that birdie, or par you desire so much. Please remember the problem does not lie in your golf clubs, or the weather, it lies directly with you. You are totally responsible for every movement you make on the golf course. Start right now to put those bad habits to rest and begin playing with attitude, and focus.

Good luck in your golfing.
