Just as all new products that come on the market have their individual reviews, so do golf balls. There are numerous golf balls being manufactured everyday, with new models and types being introduced every once in a while. The variations in the golf balls usually lie in the number of dimples there are in the balls, the construction of the ball, and the distance it can travel at a single shot.

The golf ball review describes the launching of a new brand of golf balls, placing importance on the different models of the individual brands. For example, Nike had first introduced the original One ball one year, to be followed by a line of balls for every type of golfer. All this information is furnished in the golf ball review.

The next thing that may be described in the golf ball review is the construction of the golf ball. Some of the golf balls are three-piece balls and others may have a four-piece construction. The writer of the golf ball review may then write his comments on the distance the golf ball may cover and compare this distance with other golf balls.

Of course, the golf ball review not only describes the positive points of the golf balls, but also the negative points of the golf ball. Some balls may not have a good feel to the user of the ball; while some balls are good for putting, others are good for chipping. This is all mentioned in the golf ball review.

The last point that is usually found in the golf ball reviews is the opinion of the writer on which ball is better for golf matches. The answer may be provided with the reasons. Then of course, a mention of the price of the golf ball is provided. There is also a mention of whether or not that golf ball is recommended for use in tournaments So when buying a golf ball, it is always advisable to read some golf ball reviews first.

I can remember the first time I ventured out onto a golf course and tried to hit the cover off the ball on the first tee. My memory of that inauspicious debut was a skewed shot which disappeared into the bushes to the right and became just another lost ball statistic. My basic golf swing technique for starters was crappy but more importantly, I didn’t really understand the mechanics of the golf swing.

The end result of that very first game was a large triple figure score and about fifteen golf balls which never saw the light of day again. Oh, I can laugh about it now but if you want to know what epitomised embarrassment I’m here to tell you it was yours truly on that fateful day.

Can you as a novice draw similar comparisons? Well, if you haven’t mastered the basic golf swing yet and you plan on improving your driving, chipping and putting then read the rest of this article.

Physics And The Basic Golf Swing

Before you can even think about using brute strength in you swing you need to understand golf isn’t really a game about power. It’s more timing and that’s why it’s a good idea to examine your clubs closely. Notice how each one is designed just a little differently than the other. The three iron has a more flatter blade than the nine iron. The three iron is designed for hitting the ball longer distances while the nine iron is designed for more up and under.

Getting into the habit of using the appropriate club for the appropriate play will get you forming good basic golf swing habits. It’s a similar story with the driving woods. In most cases, you’ll have a selection to choose from. I have four and my favorite is the fairway wood. It’s designed to be used as the follow up to the tee shot on a long range hole and used correctly, is very effective in getting a clean, crisp shot away without forcing the shot with unnecessary power.

Golf Exercise

Believe it or not, one of the keys to maintaining a good basic golf swing is fitness, or being golf fit if you like. Identifying your golfing muscles is important and if you are not sure, ask an experienced golfer. No, it doesn’t mean you need to spend five days in a gym building up to Mr. Universe levels. Simple golf stretch exercises; some involving use of a club and others just basic body stretches. You’ll be surprised how effective muscle conditioning will help your basic golf swing movement.

Enlisting the services of a short term coach is a great way to learn the basic skills. It’s like building a house; get the foundation right and you have something to build on. A coach will quickly pin point your problem areas and address them quickly. Ask at your favorite clubhouse the next time you’re there.

The basic golf swing in many ways is like a player’s “holy grail.” Once it’s mastered, you can then plan for bigger and better things, including the odd power drive off the tee!

Turn to the Search and Rescue 24-foot two-ball retriever, which makes it possible to fish out submerged balls without getting your legs wet. To better locate the ball, the device includes an orange-colored head that stays visible beneath the surface, making it easier to place the retriever over the golf ball. And once you’ve got a couple of balls in your sights, simply place the head over the balls and pick them up.
Why is it so important even for amateur golfers?

Many golfers who plays around 5-10 games per year do not realize the importance of a golf ball. Some of them think that it will not make any difference on their games and only look at the prices instead of the advantages and disadvantages. The market for golf balls is over $ 560 millions and over 875 millions balls manufactured by the industries. Every company is battling very aggressively to produce the miracle ball that one day will travel from the first to the 18 holes in one shot! I wouldn’t be surprise one day that someone will come with an insert micro chip inside that soon after your hit your ball, you will control with your remote and tell her where to go, and how far. Hey, they did it with the pulls carts and some of them end up in the lake

To understand a little bit more on how you should choose a golf ball, let’s look at the advantage and disadvantage of theses balls. I will give the bottom line of each ball which will help you making an intelligence choice. First what is the most important thing that you are looking when you play golf? Do you look for distance, back spin, feel, durability or control? Once you have chosen your category, identify how much distance you are making with a driver and if the ball goes straight or not. If you need more distance and ready to sacrifice some control lowest compression will be the best ball for you. Usually theses balls are designed for lady, junior and seniors golfers. However if you are a golfer that has tendency of slicing, use a 90 compression which will help you keeping your shots straight in the fairway. Like I always said, if you are not a professional, control is a priority instead of distance. 90% of the golfers average 200-220 yards meaning a regular speed of 80 miles per hour at the impact of the ball. The key for distance is to take a ball which is about 10 compressions less than you average speed, if you play straight only. Here is a little chart below to give more information on golf balls.

80: Lowest compression is designed for lady, junior, and senior golfers. The softer core allows for a more spring-like effect off the club face, increasing distance while sacrificing some control.

90: The compression of choice for the mass of golfers who has slices.

100: Harder, tighter core that can really only be taken benefit of by advanced golfers with high swing speeds over 100 miles per hour.

Reason why I do not suggest any companies is simply to be fair with the industry as I am not here to promote any balls, but only to give you information that will help you enjoying this sport.

SOFTER OR HARD LIKE A ROCK.
I am gonna make a suggestion as this is personal feeling. Some people prefer soft which barely makes a sound and seems floating of the club around the greens. Some others will prefer hard for durability. One thing that everyone agrees on is the number of dimples, which increase better flies. Shallow dimples generate more spin than deeper ones, increase lift, also stay in the air longer and roll less.

Hope this will help you selecting the best ball for you, according to your actual swing.

Have a nice game
Robert

Have you ever given any thought to how it all began? For instance what about the common golf ball? Where did it come from? What was its origin and what was it made of?

This comes under the category of “believe it or not” but the first golf balls were apparently made in Holland. That’s right Holland. The Scots imported the balls from across the North Sea by the barrel-load. This record goes back as far as 1496 and what were these balls made of? They apparently were made of wood. More like a small croquet ball than a golf ball.

These wooden balls were used by the Dutch and made of elm or beech. However, these golf balls were aerodynamically inefficient and eventually gave way to a white leather covered ball filled with cow’s hair. It is said that this ball, called the kaatsen ball, were the inspiration for the balls made of feathers that the Scots came up with in the 17th century. This feathery style golf ball was known as “the feathery” became the popular ball of choice.

The “feathery” are a ball covered with bull’s hide soaked in alum and then filled or stuffed with goose feathers softened by boiling. The golf ball was then shaped and painted white. The painting of the ball white was to make it easier to see. When it was dried the ball became very firm and tight. Today’s golf ball weighs about 1.62 ounces and the feathery weighed about the same but there was no uniform diameter to these balls. The feathery had its draw back. For instance the average player used 4 golf balls per round because this ball had a tendency to split and get too damp. This was a problem because the “feathery” cost twelve times the price of the old boxwood ball and about the same as a wooden club. This made golf a very expensive game of the times much too much so for the common person. This price was the result of the work involved and time it took to make 4 golf balls. The most skilled craft person could only make up to 4 “feathery” golf balls per day. Some one would have to come up with a golf ball that would be available to everyone and therefore increase the games popularity.

Along came the gutta percha ball (“gutty”). This golf ball was introduced about 1848 and did restore golf as a popular game. It did not take too long for this “gutty” ball to become the ball of choice. It was easier to manufacture and therefore affordable to the common man. Gutta percha is a gum that is the sap of a tree in Malaya. This sap was pliable when boiled and soon became hard on cooling allowing the gutty two advantages.

It was less labor intensive to produce and it would travel farther when stuck. A third advantage would be the cost, about 1 shilling in the 1850’s. However the gutty was prone to break up in mid-air forcing the rules to allow the golfer to play a fresh ball from the point where the largest fragment landed. This was the last occasion the rules of golf had to be amended because of the properties of the golf ball.

Along came the rubber core ball. This ball made a strong showing in Britain around 1901. The idea of a rubber core ball belonged to an employee of Goodrich named Coburn Haskell. It was titled, of course, the Haskell ball. A pro named Sandy Herd used the Haskell ball to win the 1902 British Open and the Golf Ball made of rubber became the games favorite ball.

That brings us to the ball as we know it. These modern day golf balls have water filled core wrapped rubber yarn. In 1998 the PGA set the ball size to 1.68 and a weight of 1.63 oz. It was stated by the U.S.G.A. that only a golf ball meeting these standards could be used in professional play.

Furthermore, you need to match your skills and experience with your golfing accessories and equipment, particularly the golf ball.

For non-golf aficionados, one golf ball is the same as other golf balls. The only major difference such people may see between one ball from another is the manufacturer or brand name. In the eye of a golfer lover, however, golf balls differ in more ways than one.

If you want to improve your game, you need to pay attention to the type, covering material, core structure, and compression rates of a ball. You must bear in mind that your swing and level of play should be matched with the golf ball you use. Thus, you can’t expect to be like Tiger Woods simply by buying and using the same golf accessories, shoes, and balls that he uses.

Here are basic golf ball comparisons you need to know to help improve your golf games:

Common Golf Ball Types

Two-piece

If you are just starting to play golf, you most probably need to consider using the two-piece golf ball. This type of ball, aside from being the cheapest type available in the market, is aimed at providing great distance. If your swing is slow, the big rubber core of the ball helps in transferring the energy from the swing to the ball efficiently, thereby providing you with good distance.

If you are a neophyte in the game, you need to concentrate on your accuracy. Hence, you need a ball that will boost your distance, enabling you to concentrate more on building your accuracy. Once you have mastered consistency, then you need to try the other types of golf ball.

Three-piece

The three-piece ball is ideal for advanced players, who have pretty much mastered control, partly because a person wouldn’t want to spend too much for a golf ball that will brandish his or her hit-and-miss swings. Such a ball, which is preferred by pro players, is composed of a core, which can be solid or made up of liquid or gel, a layer of wounded thread, and a plastic covering.

Materials used as golf ball coverings

Although there maybe other kinds of golf ball covering, the two most popular are the surlyn and balata.

Balata

Balata golf balls, which are usually three-piece balls, are made of soft covering. Professional golfers prefer such balls because they not only cuts and scuffs easily, but they are also easier to control. Furthermore, balata balls give more spin. However, these balls have shorter life span and are more expensive.

Surlyn

Surlyn balls are more apt for amateur gofers because they are cheaper. Most two-piece golf balls are made of surlyn, a hard material, thus it is more resistant to cuts and scuffs and provide more distance. Aside from being more inexpensive, such balls are also long lasting. However, it is harder to control and does not provide ample spin.

Compression rate

Traditionally, the tightness of the golf ball’s thread windings determines its compression rate. Due to recent technological advancement, however, the compression rate of a golf ball is now basically dependent on how the ball is affected when it is hit. The compression rating of golf balls usually range from 70-110.

Low compression balls

Balls with compression rating of 70-80 are considered low compression balls. Such balls are soft and are easily deformed or compressed when hit. Players with slow swings are encouraged to use such ball.

Medium compression balls

Most advanced golfers prefer balls with a compression rate of 90. These medium compression balls provide both softness and ease of control.

High compression balls

Golf balls with 100-110 compression rating are high compression balls. Such balls are hard and are less likely to deform upon impact, compared to those with lower compression rates. A high compression ball is ideal for those whose club head speeds are high.

Be keen in knowing how the type of ball or its compression rates affect your performance. Keep in mind that the knowledge of golf ball comparisons is handy in enhancing your strengths and masking your weaknesses in the golf course.
